PRANABDA Joins League Of BHARAT Ratnas

Bong community has hailed presentation of Bharat Ratna award to former President Pranab Kumar Mukherjee by his immediate successor Ram Nath Kovind at a ceremony held in the hallowed Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 8. India’s highest civilian honour after a gap of four years, was also awarded posthumously to Dr Bhupen Hazarika, legendary singer-composer, and eminent social reformer Nanaji Deshmukh. Bharat Ratna was first institutionalized in 1954. Mukherjee, 84, is the fifth Bong to have become recipient of the prestigious award in recognition of his exceptional service of the highest order in a field of human endeavour and public service.

DURGA Puja Nominated For UNESCO recognition

EVERY Bong has reason to feel elated as the Paris headquartered UNSECO is considering India’s plea for recognizing Durga Puja held annually in September –October for protection and preservation. Kolkata’s Durga Puja is India’s official nomination for UNESCO’s 2020 list of cultural institutions that requires protection and preservation. This view has been conveyed by Sangeet Natak Akademi under the Union Ministry for Culture to The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. Durga Puja, a ‘conglomeration of different cultures’ is India’s choice for its 2020 update. Professor Tapati Guha Thakurta led research team which has scripted the nomination dossier, has opined that “Kolkata’s Durga Puja has developed a special artistic profile which no other festival has with modern artists and designers coming together to produce a new urban art. PRESIDENT Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Justice Indira Banerjee, Judge of the Delhi High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court with effect from the date she assumes charge of her office. Born in September 1957, Justice Banerjee is at present number two in the Delhi High Court, and she brings with her around 32 years of experience, including more than 15 years as a judge.Justice Indira Banerjee from Bengal be the second woman after Justice Kanta Kumari Bhatnagar from June to November 1992 to head the hallowed court.
